To use the drag and drop method instead, press down on the selected cells in Excel. Keeping the source formatting preserves the cells as a table, while keeping the text or merging the formatting converts the cells into straight text within Word ( Figure C). You can now opt to Keep Source Formatting, Keep Text Only, or Merge Formatting. After you’ve pasted them, tap the Paste Options icon. From the popup toolbar, tap the Paste command. Tap the area in the document where you want to paste the copied cells. A menu should then pop up with commands to Cut, Copy, Edit, and more. Open a spreadsheet in Excel with information you want to copy to Word ( Figure A). Release the icon, and Excel should nestle into place as a Slide Over pane. Drag the icon for another Office app such as Excel to the right side of the screen. Next, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to display the Dock. Create or open a document in which you want to copy and paste an item. Open the first app from the Dock–let’s say Microsoft Word. To do that, just drag and drop each icon onto the Dock. For this article I’m using the 11-inch iPad Pro. The iPad Air and the older iPad minis support Slide Over but not Split View.

The iPad Pro lineup, the iPad mini 4, and the 9.7-inch iPad support both modes. The capabilities of Slide Over and Split View vary based on the model of your iPad. With Split View, you can display two or three apps together on the screen and resize each window. With Slide Over, you can view two apps on the screen with one app in a narrow pane resting on top of the other. The iPad offers a couple of multitasking features that let you view and work with more than one app at the same time.
